KAREN STEPHENS
Bush Poetry, 2020
acrylic paint on handmade paper
Framed: 36 cm x 48 cm
Using translucent washes of paint, Karen attempts to seize the phenomena of seeing light spill across remote landscapes at dusk. In this, the ordinary transcends into something extraordinary, with grass illuminated as exotic lanters, and light-filled flowers dancing on air.
Bush Poetry
Karen works predominantly in the field of contemporary landscape painting and her practice re-examines and disrupts the sense of perception and horizon. Her paintings are not representational depictions of landscape but influenced by a questioning of her interaction with this space. She is known for her vibrant, raw, expressionistic manner and her handmade surfaces. Of her practice Karen says she is “looking for something” and “re-imagining not what landscape is but what it can be.”
